SPRING FORWARD SATURDAY NIGHT
This Sunday, March 14th, we begin Daylight Saving time, so remember to turn your clock ahead one hour before going to bed on Saturday night. If you forget to spring forward, you will be an hour late for worship and Sunday school. See you Sunday.

LENTEN VENTURES SERIES A SUCCESS

All the members of the Adult Education Committee would like to thank you for your participation in this year’s Lenten Ventures Series. The meals were wonderful (thanks to Nathana Wood and Sheila Baber), the discussions were invigorating, and the fellowship gave us a chance to meet and interact with members of First Christian we might not ordinarily see. Thank you to all the members of First Christian who provided leadership for various workshops. At its next meeting, the Adult Education Committee will
use the information you shared in the weekly feedback forms to make next year’s Ventures a meaningful time as well. The Committee hopes that Ventures added something to your personal Lenten journey.

SHORT TERM BIBLE STUDY BEGINS THIS SUNDAY

Disciple Bible Study is a program that gives you a chance to do more in-depth study of God’s word. It has daily reading assignments for your thought and reflection, and meets once a week for about two hours to discuss your weekly readings. Invitation to the New Testament is an 8-week study that explores some of the important themes, ideas, and stories of the New Testament. An evening class will begin on Sunday, March 14th at 5:00 p.m., and an afternoon class will begin on Tuesday, March 16 at 1:30 p.m. Both of these classes will be led by Rev. Gary Hardwick. The cost for the class is $15 for study materials. Please call Gary at the office for more information.

CMF MONTHLY MEETING

All the men of First Christian Church are invited to the Monthly Meeting on Thursday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. After a fellowship meal, we will enjoy a presentation by Matt Runkle from Native Roots Market. Matt will share some information about Native Roots Market. He will talk about issues related to fair trade, organic food, and sustainable agriculture. The cost for the meal is $6, and you can make a reservation by calling the church office. Contact Gary for questions or more information.

EASTER LILIES
As is tradition, the church sanctuary will be decorated with lilies on Easter Sunday morning. As a convenience to the church family, the Easter lilies have been pre-purchased by the church. If you would like to purchase a lily, you may call or come by the church office to complete a form indicating for whom the lily is dedicated. A list of dedications will be included in the Norman Christian the week following Easter. The cost of the Easter lily is $11.00, and you may pay by cash or with a check made out to First Christian Church, indicating in the memo line that the check is for the purchase of an Easter lily. Thank you.

HOLY WEEK LUNCHES AT FIRST CHRISTIAN

The annual Holy Week lunches, to be held the week of March 29 through April 2nd, will be hosted by First Christian Church of Norman this year. Lunches will be served in the Fellowship Hall beginning at 11:45 a.m. each day for the cost of only $7.00 which will include the meal, drink, and dessert. Each day will include a homily as we reflect on the journey of Holy Week in preparation for Easter Sunday. Those who will be speaking this year are—

  • Monday: Joey Armstrong, Community Minister at First Baptist
  • Tuesday: Harriet Kemp, Associate Minister at McFarlin Memorial Methodist
  • Wednesday: Joe Ted Miller, retired Pastor at St. John’s Episcopal
  • Thursday: Kim Gaston, Associate Minister at First Christian
  • Friday: Tom Boyd, Professor in the O.U. Religious Studies Program

No reservations are required, and you may attend without having lunch. For more information, please call the church at 329-2192.

PRAYER VIGIL SIGN-UP

Following the annual Maundy-Thursday worship service on April 1st, the church will participate in the 40 hour prayer vigil. As in past years, members and friends of the church are invited to sign up for a 30 minute time slot for prayer, which can be done in the church chapel or at home. The prayer vigil sign up sheet will begin“making the rounds” to various Sunday School classes, and the sign up sheet will also be available in the church gallery during the next several weeks. During the week, the sign up sheet is in the church office, and you may call the church office to reserve a time for participating in the prayer vigil.

Many who take part in the prayer vigil report how meaningful the time spent in prayer is, especially during the time of year when we remember the events of Maundy-Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday. To sign up for a time, or to ask questions, please contact the church office. Thank you.

EASTER CARNIVAL COMING UP

It’s that time again, as the annual Easter Egg Hunt is almost upon us! Continuing in the fun tradition of First Christian Church, the EGG-stravaganza will take place in and around the church on Saturday, April 3rd at 10:00 in the morning! Various hunts will be held for toddlers through 4th graders. Egg hiders (the Chi Rho and CYF youth) will be at the church at 9:00 to prepare for all the excitement. You don’t want to miss this EGG-citing event, which will also include various games and activities in addition to the egg hunt.

There will be a sign-up sheet in the Gallery for those who can volunteer time to help with the various games that will be played—it is easy to do as the games will be provided. We simply need someone to oversee the games. Thank you.

COLLEGE

We will have Service Night next Wednesday at the shelter. We will be decorating Easter Eggs, having dinner, and other fun activities. Plan to meet either at the church at 5:00 or at the shelter at 5:30.

Mission Trip is only 2 months away! We will be heading to Slidell, LA on May 16th in the afternoon and returning to the church late in the evening on May 22nd. Registration details will be coming soon!

The next book in our year is A Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs and will be available for pick up in the office beginning March 14th. It has taken awhile for them to arrive, but this book is worth the wait.

LOGOS

God’s forgiving love embraces everyone. The youngest, the oldest, the wanderers, the dutiful, the sinful, the just: all are offered a welcome that can make everything new. Yet love that reconciles is not only a gift God extends to us. Love’s gift becomes ours to share. The most familiar of relationships hold the promise of embracing others in love. God’s welcome intends to leave no one on the outside looking in. God provides the grace and welcome we need. In what ways have you been on the receiving end and the giving end of such love and forgiveness? Where might God be leading the church through these passages and with these experiences of such love?

Logos Lenten Prayer
Your embrace, O God, is our life and our hope. Receive us when we
drift off into recklessness and despair. Receive us when we drift off
into self-righteousness and resentment. We thank you for grace
that embraces us, and gifts of love for us to share. With love,
Amen.

VOYAGE INTO DiscipleSHIP

shipMary has had a role in many Bible stories, and there have been a few different Mary’s too. The one we are talking about is not Mary the Mother of Jesus but one of his followers. We know she used expensive perfume to anoint Jesus and used that perfume to wash his feet, but what other stories has this Mary been involved in? We have seen and heard about her in other parts of the Bible … but where? We will discover some of the other adventures of this woman named Mary this week in Voyage Into Discipleship! See ya Sunday!

Come to youth this Sunday to find out details! Youth Group on Sunday, March 28th, will be our annual Lenten Activity of Peter’s Walk.
