SUNDAY SUMMER STUDY SERIES BEGINS THIS SUNDAY

On June 13, 20, and 27, Adult Sunday school classes are invited to take a break and join the Sunday Summer Study Series. This year’s courses include:

  • Spiritual Flourishing in a Busy World: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” We hear this verse from Psalms in worship but it, and other verses like it, contain insights to help our spiritual growth. Rev. Paul Hopkins will explore a variety of Biblical passages that not only enhance our worship but enhance our life of faith. This class will meet in the Pathfinders Classroom, on the third floor right behind the Sanctuary Balcony.

  • Is Social Justice in the Bible?: Recently a popular news commentator suggested that members should “flee” from churches that support economic or social justice, and there has been a lot of response and controversy to that suggestion. Dr. Curtis McKnight will explore what the term “social justice” means and how social justice is understood in our society and culture and how that compares to the way it is described in the Biblical story. This
class will meet in the Chapel.

  • A New Look at the Ten Commandments: The Ten Commandments are familiar to all of us, but they are much more than part of the Jewish law or words to place on a public monument. Explore how these well-known words can add meaning to as well as challenge your own life of faith. Rev. Catherine Bennett will lead this study. It will meet in the Study and Share Classroom in the Sanctuary Vestibule.

  • Doing Your Faith: We live in a society that encourages a “marketplace of ideas,” but sometimes it is hard to know how to think about and decide on concerns, issues, and struggles in our world. Do we just offer our opinion? Where does our opinion come from? How do we reflect, talk about, and act on these in ways that are true to our Christian faith? Rev. Gary Hardwick will discuss four resources we have as Christians that allow us to reflect and act theologically. This class will meet in the Parlor.

This a great chance for regular Sunday school participants to interact with members of other classes. Or if you haven’t had a chance to experience Sunday school, this is a great way to check it out. No registration needed; just decide which class you want to attend. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday. If you have any questions, contact Gary at the church office.

MOUNTAIN OF FOOD OFFERING THIS SUNDAY

The annual Mountain of Food offering is one of the programs sponsored by the Outreach Committee. The money raised through this offering provides food to people in our local community who are in need. The number of people out of work continues to increase, and families here need our assistance. In past years we have donated money or given canned goods to local food banks, but now we provide money for a food voucher program supervised by Food and Shelter for Friends and Wrights IGA. Last year the Mountain of Food Offering provided food vouchers for 123 households; 232 individuals (including 51 children under age 17) in our community were able to avoid hunger because they received a food voucher.

The food voucher program provides accountability and allows people to receive assistance and retain their dignity, because they can shop in the store for the items they need. This is an excellent way for us as a Christian Community to assist others in our own community. The offering envelopes will be in the church pews the next two Sundays. Please help us provide food for our friends and neighbors that need this assistance this year. Thank you for all you do to make a difference in our Church and our Community.

DISCIPLE DISCUSSION GROUP BEGINS NEW BOOK STUDY

Join the Disciple Bible Study Discussion group this summer as they read and discuss Jews and Christians: A Troubled Family by Walter Harrelson and Rabbi Randall Falk. This unique book identifies various aspects of both the Jewish and Christian faiths, which are then discussed by a Jewish and Christian writer. The group will meet on June 13, June 27, July 11, and July 25 at 5 p.m. in the Parlor. This group is open to all members of First Christian who would like to explore this timely book. You can purchase the book on Amazon. At our first meeting, we will read chapters 1 and 2. A few days before each meeting, Gary will send out some questions for reflection that we will use to guide our discussion, so if you are interested in being a part of this study, contact Gary at the church office.
